The Healthcare Pathways program consists of two primary pathways, Diagnostic Medicine and Pre-Nursing. The goal of the Diagnostic Medicine Pathway is to give students access to a broad range of coursework in the Health Sciences and medical diagnostic technologies in order to prepare for many possible college and career pathways. Pre-Nursing programs are for schools focused on pursuing NYSED-approval for a CTE Pre-Nursing program. The Healthcare Pathways aim to nurture a new generation of healthcare professionals, equipping students with strong foundational skills that will benefit them in their post-secondary education and careers.

The FutureReadyNYC Healthcare Pathways offers a comprehensive route for individuals aspiring to join the Healthcare profession. With a focus on enhancing and diversifying the Healthcare workforce, this pathway consists of four sequential years of coursework designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills.

Pre-Nursing and Diagnostic Medicine Pathways

Courses 1-4: Foundations of Health Core

Foundations of Health Core is an introductory course designed to prepare students to pursue a health career. Upon completion of this course, a proficient student will be able to identify careers in these fields, compare and contrast the features of healthcare systems, explain the legal and ethical ramifications of the healthcare setting, and begin to perform foundational healthcare skills. This course will serve as a strong foundation for all of the healthcare pathways in FRNYC.

Course 5-6: Anatomy and Physiology. From NAF:

Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology 1 is the first of two semester-long lab courses introducing basic anatomy and physiology. The first unit covers directional terminology and those aspects of chemistry and cellular biology that learners must master to study anatomy and physiology. It also instructs learners on how to use lab equipment safely.

Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology 2 is the second of two semester-long lab courses introducing basic anatomy and physiology. It builds on the knowledge and skills learners developed during Anatomy and Physiology 1 and covers the following body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, lymphatic system and immunity, digestive, urinary, and reproductive.

Pre-Nursing Pathways Pursuing Certified Medical Assisting (CMA)

Courses 7-8: Certified Medical Assisting

Certified Medical Assisting is a capstone course* designed to prepare students to sit for the CMA exam. It may be recommended that students be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and deemed competent in basic first aid, body mechanics, Standard Precaution guidelines, and confidentiality.

*NYSED CTE Certified medical assisting pathways have additional instructional and clinical hours than outlined in this document.

Diagnostic Medicine

Courses 7-8: Diagnostic Medicine

Diagnostic Medicine is a course designed to prepare students to pursue careers in the fields of: diagnostic medical imaging, medical laboratory testing, and other patient diagnostic procedures. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to describe new and evolving diagnostic technologies including radiological studies and clinical lab studies to make a patient diagnosis; to explain the legal and ethical ramifications of the healthcare setting, and begin to perform foundational healthcare skills.

  • In addition to these courses the credential of value for Healthcare Pathways is the Basic Cardiac Life Support (stepping stone)
