Digital tools for advising are a critical part of FRNYC, empowering students to take ownership of their postsecondary planning and exploration. These tools place the student at the center of their planning experience allowing them to document their journey as they build self-knowledge, explore postsecondary options, create plans, and continually reassess as they take in new knowledge, skills, and experiences.

What digital tools offer to students and advisors

The Office of Student Pathways will subsidize the cost of student licenses, training, and technical supports for FRNYC schools to implement college and career advising tools: Overgrad, and Xello (each school will choose one tool). These tools will enable students to perform key FRNYC tasks while also providing schools visibility into student progress and streamlining data collection for STARS. Schools that are currently using an approved digital tool for advising will not be required to switch platforms at this time.

Summary of Milestones for Digital tools:

  • All schools should have selected a tool ahead of SY25-26. If you need help, please reach out to Simone Mikolich at smikolich3@schools.nyc.gov
  • During summer training (institute) schools will be provided with guidance on how to fully implement their tools.
      • During the summer institute, schools will receive guidance on how to build strong college and career advising supports for students using digital tools. Shared Lane will host Digital Career Navigation Tools in August (register here). To further support implementation, schools will also have access to tool specific office hours throughout the year, where they can ask questions and receive hands-on help.
  • Using the selected tool, schools will be expected to prioritize the Career Navigation Roadmap College and Career Aligned Activities outlined in each school’s Implementation Workbook CNR School Action Plan tab shared at Summer Institute.
  • Progress monitoring against each of these elements will begin shortly and occur on a monthly basis.
